JWS Book Cover

The JDC is pleased to present two chapters from Developing Java Web Services: Architecting and Developing Secure Web Services Using Java, by Ramesh Nagappan, Robert Skoczylas, and Rima Patel Sriganesh, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Foreword by Simon Phipps, Chief Technology Evangelist, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

About the Book

This hands-on developer's guide to Web services prepares you for the next level of distributed computing. The authors clearly show how to implement and deploy Web services using Java while also explaining the fundamentals from the ground up. After providing a detailed introduction to Web services, they walk you through the Web services architecture and its core building blocks, including standards and technologies. You'll then learn how to develop Web services solutions using Sun Java Web Services Developer Pack (JWSDP 1.0) APIs and how to expose your J2EE applications as Web services.

About the Chapters

Chapter 8, "XML Processing and Data Binding with Java APIs" provides an overview of Java API for XML processing and data binding, focusing on the following:

  • Overview of XML and its complementing standards
  • Simple API for XML
  • Document Object Model (DOM)
  • The JAXP processing model and it features

Chapter 10, "Building RPC Web Services with JAX-RPC" discusses the Java API for XML RPC (JAX-RPC), which enables the development of Web services incorporating XML-based remotes procedure calls (RPCs). JAX-RPC is an integral part of the JWSDP. In a JWSDP-based Web services environment, JAX-RPC provides XML-based RPC functionality between the service requestors and the service provider.
