About the Chapters

Chapter 2, "An Abstract Model For Deployment," defines an abstract model for Java software deployment. Given the inherent differences in Java clients, specific deployment practices can vary widely. However, the abstract deployment model provided here offers a generalized approach that extends to clients ranging from handhelds to back-end servers and from smart cards to home PCs.

Chapter 11, "Runtime Client Services," examines the runtime services offered by a JNLP Client to its launched applications. This chapter discusses the JNLP class structure and the best implementation practices.

About the Author

Dr. Mauro Marinilli has been programming for over ten years and using Java technology since 1999. After graduating as a Computer Engineer from the University of Rome's "La Sapienza," he started to work full-time as a Java developer. During that period, he presented at many conferences worldwide (the last was at Trento AH 2000, with Mona Laroussi). After several projects, both in the industry and for research, he joined a mid-sized Italian software firm, Datamat, as the chief Java developer responsible for the GUI team developing the new meteorological software system used by the Italian Air Force. Dr. Marinilli collaborates with the University of Rome and other research organizations. His research interests are Intelligent Information Filtering, Information Retrieval, Human-Computer Interaction, and Adaptive Hypermedia, with papers published on conference proceedings and specialized reviews.
