Introduction

New network computers (NCs) from Sun® and IBM® are managed with a stand-alone Java-centric operating system known as the JavaOS for Business software product. Loadable device drivers, written in Java, using memory and interrupt classes to abstract device hardware, play an important, platform-independent role in the JavaOS for Business software.

This white paper presents an overview of various driver types and examines the methods drivers use to perform object-oriented I/O. SCSI drivers are included in this presentation, even though they have not yet been fully implemented in JavaOS for Business software software.

The paper is divided into three parts:

• Part 1 defines generic driver types and driver functionality.
• Part 2 displays specific driver classes and interfaces associated with a network driver.
• A glossary of terms.
