The second JavaOne conference to be held outside the United States begins today, September 25th. Over 6000 attendees are registered to take part in the three-day event, which offers developers the chance to meet with industry colleagues and learn first-hand the latest strategic and technical information about Java technology end-to-end. Sun Takes Pride in Worldwide Phenomenon The Java platform is truly a worldwide phenomenon and Sun takes pride in the success that its software has seen in the past seven years. According to Evans Data Corp., Java technology is used by a higher percentage of developers (55%) than any other programming language. Nowhere is this growth more obvious than in Japan and the rest of the Asia/Pacific region where the major carriers have deployed Java technology-based mobile services. Groups like Taiwan's Bureau of National Health Insurance are deploying Java Card platform-based smart cards by the millions. Additionally, Sun's Java technology partners in Asia are pioneering new uses of the technology, such as J-Phone's Sha-mail, which allows over 5 million J-Phone subscribers to take and send digital photos from their cellphone, or the Java technology-enabled vending machines from Fuji electronics that lets people buy vended products and pay with their cellphone. Sun's Brightest Thinkers Participate Featured Sun executive keynotes include Rich Green, vice president of the Java platform, who will address how Java technology is helping extend enterprise computing capabilities to consumer products; Rob Gingell, chief engineer and chairman of the Java Community Process program, who will reinforce the importance of collaboration, community, and commitment; James Gosling, vice president and Sun fellow, who will discuss the latest thinking about Java technology and demonstrate new and innovative uses. They join executives from NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, NEC, and Fujitsu who have also been asked to keynote. JavaOne Pavilion Hosting Over 100 Exhibitors The Pavilion will host over 100 exhibitors, which includes Sun's support of twenty-seven pods demonstrating Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) solutions and the progress that Sun has made with productizing Java technology. Additional activities planned include 95 technical sessions and 28 Birds-of-a-Feather sessions.
