The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition ("J2EE" ) version 1.4 application server will be a complete implementation of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition 1.4 specification once it is final. The J2EE SDK is intended as a proof of concept and example for implementations in the application server marketplace. The J2EE SDK includes a J2EE application server, the J2SE platform as its foundation, and various tools to help developers prototype J2EE applications and learn about the J2EE platform and technologies. It can be used as a J2EE development enviroment for applications prior to their deployment and distribution. Everything a developer needs to get started using the J2EE 1.4 platform, including the J2EE Tutorial and Java BluePrints, is available now for download.
The J2EE[tm] 1.4 Tutorial is a beginner's guide to developing enterprise applications on the J2EE 1.4 Application Server beta 2 release. This tutorial is intended for programmers interested in developing and deploying Web services and Web applications on the J2EE 1.4 Application Server. In addition to Web services technologies, this tutorial also includes new chapters that cover major upgrades (for example, JSP 2.0, EJB 2.1, JMS 1.1, and Connector 1.5) to existing J2EE technologies.

The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition is an integrated platform which simplifies solutions for multi-tier, enterprise applications. The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) extends the cross-platform portability of Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) technology by providing a foundation of common services and APIs, including XML, JavaServer Pages technology, and Servlets. The Java 2 SDK, Enterprise Edition (J2EE SDK) is the reference implementation for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. The J2EE SDK is not a solution by itself. Instead, it is a reference which expedites the development of solutions which are to be delivered by Java 2 licensees, accelerating the growth of a competitive, compatible market for J2EE components and applications.
Release 1.3_01 is an update to Version 1.3 that corrects the deployment descriptors put out by J2EE SDK 1.3 tools for EJB CMP 2.0 entity beans and EJB CMP 1.1 entity beans to make them compatible with beans developed on other J2EE application servers for portability purposes. Users developing portable applications with the J2EE SDK using these technologies should download the new release.
