Version 1.3.1 of the Java 2 SDK, Enterprise Edition ("J2EE" SDK) is a complete implementation of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition 1.3. The J2EE SDK is intended as a proof of concept and example for implementations in the application server marketplace. The J2EE SDK includes a J2EE application server and various tools to help developers prototype J2EE applications and learn about the J2EE platform and technologies. It can be used as a J2EE development enviroment for applications prior to their deployment and distribution.
What's New in J2EE SDK 1.3.1
The 1.3.1 release of the J2EE SDK is an incremental release adding the following new feature to the Final Release of 1.3:
- Enhanced application update function in the deploytool.
- Improved handling and performance of non-XA transactions.
- Performance improvement for start-up, deployment, naming, and running enterprise beans.
- Additional testing of J2EE components by the verifier.
What's New in the J2EE 1.3 Platform
The J2EE 1.3 platform includes enhancements to the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages ("JSP") technologies with the addition of the Tomcat 4.0 container. Servlets now support application level filters and application event listeners and JSP pages support XML page syntax. The J2EE Connector Architecture provides additional connectivity to existing enterprise information systems. Enhancements to the Enterprise JavaBeans component model include message-driven beans, interoperability between EJB containers, and container-managed persistence version 2.0. This version of container-managed persistence allows you to define relationships and local interfaces for enterprise beans.
Supported Operating Systems and Required Software
This release relies on the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition ("J2SE"). The following table lists the required version of the J2SE for each operating system that is supported with this release of the J2EE SDK.

Note: Version 1.2 of the J2SE will not work with this release of the J2EE SDK.
