System Requirements

Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition, v 1.4.2 is supported on Linux platforms running on 64-bit Intel Itanium 2 processors. A minimum of 32 megabytes of RAM is required. A minimum of 48 megabytes of RAM is recommended.

Your machine should have at least 75 megabytes of free disk space before installing the Java 2 SDK.

For supported versions of Linux and desktop managers, see System Configurations.

Installation Instructions

This procedure installs the Java 2 SDK, but not the Java Plug-in, Java Web Start or public Java 2 Runtime Environment (which are not yet available for 64-bit Linux).

The Java 2 SDK for Linux 64-bit comes bundled in two install formats:

  • Self-extracting binary:
    j2sdk-1_4_2_<version>-linux-ia64.bin

  • RPM File:
    j2sdk-1_4_2_<version>-linux-ia64-rpm.bin
To install, download these files and otherwise follow the 32-bit Linux installation.

Known Problems

When running the rpm command, the warning "user java_re does not exist - using root" may be displayed. You can ignore this warning, which is due to a bug in the installation package.
