Installation Notes

Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition, v. 1.4.2
and NetBeans IDE 3.5.1
Software Cobundle for Microsoft Windows Systems

  Japanese

This download contains both the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition (Java 2 SDK), v. 1.4.2 for Microsoft Windows systems and the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 integrated development environment.

This file can be used to install the Java 2 SDK software and NetBeans IDE in a directory of your choice. You must have Administrator privileges for this installer to install the Java 2 SDK and NetBeans IDE.

Both Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 and NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 have been tested on the following Microsoft Windows platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (SP 3)
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (SP 6)

Installing the Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 and NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Software Cobundle

Download the installation file into a directory of your choice.

Check that the file that you have downloaded, j2sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-windows.exe, has the same number of bytes that is indicated on the download page. If the file size does not match, the file might have been corrupted during download. In that case, try downloading again.

Prepare for installation.

  • Verify that your system meets or exceeds the recommended minimum hardware requirements:
    • Pentium III processor, 500 MHz.
    • 256 MBytes RAM.
    • 570 MBytes free space. This number includes:
      • 200 MBytes of temporary disk space on your system drive.
      • 120 MBytes of temporary disk space needed for installation. The installer uses the directory as specified by the TEMP user variable in the System Properties settings for the temporary files.
      • 250 MBytes of disk space on the drive where you intend to install the cobundle. Of this space, 50 MBytes is temporary disk space. The final permanent installation size of the cobundle is 200 MBytes.
  • Verify that you have Administrator privileges on your system.
  • If you have beta or release candidate versions of Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 or beta or release candidate versions of NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 software, uninstall them before running the cobundle installer.

Run the installer.

  1. Double-click j2sdk-1_4_2-nb-3_5_1-bin-windows.exe to launch the installer.
  2. Respond to each page of the install wizard.

You must agree to the license agreement.

  3. Follow the instructions that the installer provides.
  4. When the installation is complete, you can review the log file and then delete the download file to recover disk space.

The installer creates four subdirectories in this install directory:

  • j2sdk1.4.2 - contains the Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 software
  • netbeans3.5.1 - contains the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 software
  • _uninst - contains the uninstall jar and the uninstaller executable file.
  • _jvm - contains code that enables the NetBeans IDE to be uninstalled if there is no longer any version of the Java 2 SDK still installed on your system

The cobundle installer does not install the public JRE, Java Web Start, or the Java Plug-in. If you want to install these features, you have to do the following:

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select "Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2" and click Change.
  3. In the installer wizard, choose Modify.
  4. In the Custom Setup wizard page, set Public Java Runtime Environment to "This feature will be installed on local hard drive".
  5. Follow the rest of the steps in the wizard.

  6. Note: This procedure does not work on Windows NT Service Pack 6. In order to correctly install these features, you must upgrade to your Windows NT installation to Service Pack 6a and upgrade your Internet Explorer to version 6.

Troubleshooting tip: If Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 already exists on your machine, this installer reports that it will use this detected Java 2 SDK version. If installation fails, it could be because of an inconsistency between the Windows Registry and the physical location of the Java 2 SDK. In such a situation, uninstall the existing Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 (using the Add/Remove Programs utility) and install both the Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 and NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 using this installer.

Uninstalling the Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 and NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Software Cobundle

If you want to uninstall either of these products, you must uninstall them separately.

NetBeans IDE can be uninstalled by choosing NetBeans IDE | NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 | Uninstall from the Start menu. Both programs can be uninstalled separately using your Windows system's Add/Remove Programs utility.

If you uninstall the Java 2 SDK, v. 1.4.2 software, NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 will not be able to run unless you change the -jdkhome parameter to point to another installation of the Java 2 SDK. To change the value of -jdkhome, navigate to the cobundle installation's netbeans3.5.1\bin directory, open the ide.cfg file in a text editor, and edit the -jdkhome parameter. By default, the cobundle installation is located at C:\Program Files\j2sdk_nb.
