J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 6 and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle

These instructions are for the Java^TM 2 Platform, Standard Edition Development Kit (J2SE 5.0 JDK Update 6) and the NetBeans IDE 4.1 integrated development environment bundle installer for the following Operating Systems:

• Windows
• Solaris (SPARC version)
• Solaris (x86 version)
• Linux

Installing the J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle on the Windows Operating System

You can install the J2SE 5.0 JDK software and NetBeans IDE in a directory of your choice. You must, however, have Administrator privileges for this installer to install the J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE. By default, the installer places the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06, regardless of the specifed JDK install location.

Note: This installer will not displace the system version of the Java platform that is supplied by the Windows Operating System.

Both J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 have been tested on the following:

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional (SP2)
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (SP3)

Download the installation file into a directory of your choice.

Once the jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-win-ml.exe has completed downloading, verify that the process successfully completed by comparing its byte count with that posted on the download page. Alternately, if the checksum fingerprint is provided on the download page, you can use the md5sum command to verify that the downloaded file's fingerprint matches. If the file's byte count or fingerprint do not match, the file may have been corrupted during the download process. If this happens, download the bundle again.

Prepare for installation.

1. Verify that your system meets or exceeds the minimum hardware requirements:
• Pentium III workstation, 500 MHz.
• 512 MBytes RAM.
• 415 MBytes free space (235 MBytes of permanent disk space for the software and 180 MBytes of temporary disk space required during installation).

Note: The installer uses the %USERDIR%\Local Settings\Temp directory for temporary files.

2. Verify that you have Administrator privileges on your system.

Run the installer.

1. Double-click jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-win-ml.exe to launch the installer.
2. In the InstallShield installation wizard, respond to the License Agreement.

   Note: You must click Accept in the License Agreement panel for the software installation to proceed.

3. Specify the directories within which you wish to install the bundle components.
4. Review the Installation Preview Panel to ensure the software installation location is correct.
5. Click Next to proceed with the installation.
6. When the installation is complete, you can review the log file (%install directory%\_uninst\install.log) to verify the software was installed correctly. If necessary, you can then delete the downloaded installation file to recover disk space.

Uninstalling the J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle from Windows

Each product in the bundle must be uninstalled separately.

To uninstall NetBeans IDE 4.1:

1. From your system's Start menu, choose Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Select NetBeans from the list and click Remove.

To uninstall the J2SE JDK 5.0:

1. From your system's Start menu, open the Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Select the J2SE Development Kit 5.0 from the list and click Remove.

Note: If you uninstall the J2SE JDK 5.0 software, but wish to continue using NetBeans IDE 4.1, you must set the IDE's -jdkhome parameter to point to an alternate installation of the J2SE JDK as outlined below.

To uninstall the J2SE Runtime Environment:

1. From your system's Start menu, open the Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
3. Select J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 from the list and click Remove.

To change the value of -jdkhome:

1. Navigate to the bundle installation's netbeans4.1\etc directory. By default, the bundle NetBeans IDE installation is located at C:\Program Files\NetBeans4.1.
2. Open the netbeans.conf file in a text editor, and edit the netbeans_jdkhome parameter.

Installing the J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle on the Solaris Operating System (SPARC Platform Edition)

You can install the J2SE 5.0 JDK software and NetBeans IDE in a directory of your choice. You do not have to be a root user to use this installer unless you choose to install this bundle in a system-wide location.

Note: This installer will not displace the system version of the Java platform that is supplied by the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS).

Both J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 have been tested on the following:

• Solaris 8 OS (SPARC Edition)
• Solaris 9 OS (SPARC Edition)
• Solaris 10 OS (SPARC Edition)

Download the installation file into a directory of your choice.

Once jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-solsparc-ml.binhas completed downloading, verify that the process successfully completed by comparing the file's byte count with that posted on the download page. Alternately, if the checksum fingerprint is provided on the download page, you can use the md5sum command to verify that the downloaded file's fingerprint matches. If the file's byte count or fingerprint do not match, the file may have been corrupted during the download process. If this happens, download the bundle again.

1. If you are installing on Solaris OS, install the required Solaris OS patches before proceeding further. If you install this bundle without having first installed the proper Solaris patches, you may experience unexpected behavior with the installer or the Java platform.

   You can find the Java 2, Standard Edition cluster patches for the Solaris OS, versions 8, 9 and 10 at http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/J2SE.

2. Verify that your system meets or exceeds the recommended minimum hardware requirements:
• Ultra 10 workstation, 450 MHz.
• 512 MBytes RAM.
• 415 MBytes free space (235 MBytes of permanent disk space for the software and 180 MBytes of temporary disk space required during installation).

Note: The installer uses the /tmp or the /var/tmp directory for temporary files.

3. Navigate to the directory into which you downloaded the installer file.
4. Type: chmod 755 jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-solsparc-ml.bin
   to change the installer file's permissions so it can be executed.

Run the installer.

1. Type the following command from the directory where you placed the installation file:

   ./jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-solsparc-ml.bin

2. In the InstallShield installation wizard, respond to the License Agreement.

   Note: You must click Accept in the License Agreement panel for the software installation to proceed.

3. Specify the directories within which you wish to install the bundle components.
4. Review the Installation Preview Panel to ensure the software installation location is correct.
5. Click Next to proceed with the installation.
6. When the installation is complete, you can review the log file ($NETBEANS/_uninst/install.log) to verify the software was installed correctly. If necessary, you can then delete the downloaded installation file to recover disk space.

Note: If you choose to install this bundle into a system-wide location such as /usr/local, you must first login as root to gain the necessary permissions.

Uninstalling the J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle from Solaris (SPARC Platform Edition)

Each product in the bundle must be uninstalled separately.

To uninstall NetBeans IDE 4.1:

1. Navigate to the _uninst subdirectory of your NetBeans IDE installation directory.
2. Type ./uninstaller to run the InstallShield uninstaller.

To uninstall J2SE JDK 5.0:

1. Navigate into the _uninst subdirectory of your JDK installation directory.
2. Type ./uninstall.sh to run the uninstaller.

2. Type ./uninstaller to run the InstallShield uninstaller.

To uninstall J2SE JDK 5.0:

1. Navigate into the _uninst subdirectory of your JDK installation directory.
2. Type ./uninstall.sh to run the uninstaller.

Installing the J2SE JDK 5.0 and NetBeans IDE 4.1 Software Bundle on the Linux Operating System

You can install the J2SE 5.0 JDK software and NetBeans IDE in a directory of your choice. You do not have to be a root user to use this installer unless you choose to install this bundle in a system-wide location.

Note: This installer will not displace the system version of the Java platform that is supplied by the Linux Operating System (Linux OS).

Both J2SE 5.0 JDK and NetBeans IDE 4.1 have been tested on the following:

• Red Hat Linux 9
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
• Java Desktop System 2.0

Download the installation file into a directory of your choice.

Once jdk-1_5_06-nb-4_1-linux-ml.bin has completed downloading, verify that the process successfully completed by comparing its byte count with that posted on the download page. Alternately, if the checksum fingerprint is provided on the download page, you can use the md5sum command to verify that the downloaded file's fingerprint matches. To uninstall NetBeans IDE 4.1:

1. Navigate to the _uninst subdirectory of your NetBeans IDE installation directory.
2. Type ./uninstaller to run the InstallShield uninstaller.

To uninstall J2SE JDK 5.0:

1. Navigate into the _uninst subdirectory of your JDK installation directory.
2. Type ./uninstall.sh to run the uninstaller.
