Supported System Configurations

The configurations listed on this page apply to both the J2SE Development Kit (JDK) and J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE). This chart includes links to the installation instructions ("Install"), followed by the minimum free disk space required before starting installation.

Refer to the Supported Locales document for the supported writing systems (languages) for each platform. The JRE does not support all writing systems on all platforms.

Update Release Footnotes

  1. Support for Solaris x64 introduced in J2SE 5.0 Update 2.
  2. Support for AMD64/EM64T 32-bit mode Windows introduced in J2SE 5.0 Update 2.
    Prior to Update 2, J2SE 5.0 supports AMD Opteron (32) Windows in this configuration.
  3. Support for AMD64/EM64T 64-bit mode Windows introduced in J2SE 5.0 Update 2.
    Prior to Update 2, J2SE 5.0 supports AMD Opteron (64) Windows in this configuration.
  4. This OS is currently in RC1 from Microsoft. Data Center versions are not supported by Sun.
  5. Support for AMD64/EM64T 32-bit mode Linux introduced in J2SE 5.0 Update 2.
    Prior to Update 2, J2SE 5.0 supports AMD Opteron (32) Linux in this configuration.
  6. Support for AMD64/EM64T 64-bit mode Linux introduced in J2SE 5.0 Update 2.
    Prior to Update 2, J2SE 5.0 supports AMD Opteron (64) Linux in this configuration.
  7. Support for Windows Vista was introduced in J2SE 5.0, Update 11.
  8. Support for IE 7 on Windows XP was introduced in J2SE 5.0, Update 11.
  9. Support for Mozilla Firefox 2.0 was introduced in J2SE 5.0, Update 12.
  10. Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 was introduced in J2SE 5.0, Update 14.

Browser Footnotes

Browsers listed above are supported for JavaTM Plug-in software and JavaTM Web Start software.
Further details:
- 64-bit support for Java Plug-in software is currently not available
- For 64-bit versions of Solaris OS, Linux and Windows support is for 32-bit browsers only
- Support for Netscape 4.7.x on Solaris 8 on SPARC and x86
- Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP2+) and 6.x on Windows 98 and Windows 2000
- Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP and Windows 2003
- Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP and Windows Vista
- Netscape 7 and 7.1 are not offically supported, but should work

Other Operating System Notes

- IA32 = Intel Architecture 32-bit
- J2SE 5.0 does not provide support for Itanium 2
