Java EE SDK

Compared to the J2EE application servers like Oracle Application Server, IBM WebSphere, and BEA WebLogic, Sun's application server is by far the simplest and most intuitive system for users to develop and deploy their J2EE applications via its simple web page layout and work flow. My overall impression is that Sun application server is simple enough for everyone to use not just for experienced J2EE developers and sufficient enough for me to complete a few experiments in a timely manner without going too far for further information.
- Joe Nguyen, Lockheed Martin, USA

I was very happy to see a nice looking admin console back in the initial 8.0 version. While I was part of the early access testing JSC2 and the final version, I really enjoyed using the debugging and deployment features. In the ninth version, I noticed a great improvement in every single aspect for administration. I love the the addition of web services in the app server.
- Serge Bornow, NetHandicap.com, Canada

I was excited by the process of building the WAR file in NetBeans on my local machine and then uploading it through the Administration deploy feature on my dedicated webhost. I have decided to use this model for all of my development projects.
- Vincent Murray, Barewire.net, Canada

Nice, solid (only a few crashes which seem to have been mostly my fault). In short, I would recommend the Java EE application server to a friend.
- Stephen Connolly, stvconsultants.com, Ireland

I just love the documentation you provide and the support one can get from the forums! It makes life so much easier. Once again, you have absolutely proven the power of Java!
- Lenni Laukkanen, Helia Inc., Finland

Slick, simple to install via NetBeans 5.5 Preview. NB 5.5 IDE is also very good. Works great with latest Java 6 binary drops (thanks!). And it seems to work equally well under Linux as well as Windows. You guys have put a lot of effort into making it look and work well, and it shows in a solid professional offering (even if it is just a preview)!
- William Beebe, Sparta Inc., USA

The main advantage of the Java EE 5 SDK is ease of development and new support for SOA applications. Lastly I am freed from the old fashioned programming style of developing web services. And not only this, deployment is also very cool--everything is so easy now. I passed the SCDJWS exam and now Java EE 5 SDK helps to concentrate on the business itself including chart diagrams, UML etc.
- Petr Kleja, The Prague Stock Exchange, Prague, Czech Republic

I like the JNDI browser. Nice improvement! The documentation for SJSAS has always been top-notch. You guys kick JBoss's behind!
- Alan Petersen, USA

It would be nice to have support specifically for JSF with complete Ajax integration providing a great platform for building rich clients. Currently, vendors provide rich components, but no one seems to be doing great justice to them. It would be great if Sun could propose a JSR to include RCF as a part of the JEE platform.
- Ramesh Harsha, Oracle, India

A cursory glance through the Glassfish source code gave me enough confidence to put it on the short list, saving me from sitting through hours of mind-numbing sales presentations of debatable quality.
- Mikael Gueck, University of Helsinki, Finland

First an honest disclaimer that I'm fairly new to Java programming and just took my first steps on the enterprise level through your Java Enterprise System. Therefore, my experience with support forums should be ignored. Overall, I can say that the Java EE SDK is simply overwhelming and extremely well documented (as can be expected from Sun), backwards compatible (all my current applications ran without problems) and it looks very complete.
- Peter Luyenga, LoSoCo, The Netherlands

It has an easy administrative interface compared to other famous application servers. And it's globally easier to manage and maintain (clear presentations and clear separation). Medium memory footprint compared to other app servers. That's very good for development and in deployment.
- Godefroy Reigler, GR Solutions, France

I had to install Sun AppServer 9 a second time. The first time I made a mistake in opting to upgrade and import CAs from the previous AS8.2 and could not start the server. After reinstalling the AS9, the admin console works quite nicely. I worked through the simple webapp and JDBC samples and am very pleased with the new Derby database and the speedier response.
- Hon Tran, Nortel, USA

Tmax Soft logo As Tmax Soft continues to lead and penetrate the enterprise market in Korea, Java EE compatibility is becoming very important to our customers and partners. With ease-of-development features like EJB 3.0, the new web service standard APIs, and a simplified programming model that virtually eliminates the need for deployment descriptors, Java EE 5 will help our customers build applications using service-oriented architectures more efficiently. We are looking forward to completing and releasing the next version of our application server product, JEUS 6.0, which is fully compatible with the Java EE 5 specifications. We will also continuously contribute to the GlassFish project in the web services, EJB and object-relational mapping area.
- Prof. Dae-Yeon Park, CTO of Tmax Soft

riodragon logo The open Java EE platform provides rich integration with enterprise technologies such as web services, XML, transaction management systems, and databases, which enables users to fully leverage their existing investments in enterprise technology and enjoy access to a wide range of complementary technologies. "Keep it simple" is a critical aspect of using and integrating enterprise platforms. Java EE 5, particularly with web services (JAX-WS 2.0), web applications (JSF), and atomic transactional components (EJB 3.0), provides a revolutionary approach to enterprise Java development and integration. Combined with Java SE enhancements in XML, Java EE 5 provides the richest and most flexible platform for enterprise integration. As an enterprise integrator, Engineering-Science sees Java EE 5 as increasing growth opportunities in this market. We look forward to leveraging Java EE 5 in our next generation of products to lower the total cost of ownership and increase return on investment for our customers.
- Charleton Barreto, riodragon (formerly Engineering-Science)

SAP logo Java is a key platform for SAP, and we are continually looking for new ways to further expand our support of multiple platforms and open standards. We believe that Java EE 5, and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.0 in particular, represents a tremendous step forward in the enterprise Java programming model. SAP is delighted to be showing a preview implementation of EJB 3.0 at the 2006 JavaOne Conference, and we look forward to supplying our customers with the final version as a key component of SAP NetWeaver.
- Aiaz Kazi, Vice President, Solution Marketing, SAP NetWeaver

Oracle logo Open standards like Java EE 5 help Oracle deliver a unique, hot-pluggable architecture that provides customers with the utmost flexibility and choice in designing their infrastructures. Oracle's contribution of TopLink Essentials, the first open source JPA implementation included in the Java EE 5 SDK, not only underscores Oracle's commitment to supporting open standards, but also recognizes the significant advancements in Java development.
- Steven G. Harris, Vice President, Java Platform Group, Oracle

JBoss logo Simplicity is the guiding principle behind the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite, and one of the primary reasons JBoss took a leadership position in implementing EJB 3.0 across several products last year. JBoss fully supports Java EE 5 because it will provide the most scalable and powerful, yet easy-to-use platform for enterprise applications.
- Sacha Labourey, Chief Technology Officer, JBoss Inc.

IronFlare logo IronFlare is pleased to have taken a role in defining this new version of the Java EE specification. The ease of use features and enhancements that have gone into this iteration will ensure that the Java EE platform maintains its dominance in the enterprise, while greatly lowering the barrier to entry.

BEA logo Java EE has provided BEA with a great platform to deliver the industry's leading application infrastructure for building, blending, and deploying service-enabled applications. As a long-time contributor to Java EE and an application server category co-inventor, BEA has made significant contributions to this latest release of the specification, Java EE 5, including Web Services Metadata (JSR 181) as well as StaX (JSR 173). BEA is excited about the simplification of the persistence model and will accelerate its adoption by providing OpenJPA, the open source implementation of the EJB 3.0 Persistence APIs.
- Patrick Linskey, EJB Technical Lead, BEA Systems

Sun Java System Application Server 8.2

A deceptively easy-to-use tool when the web admin interface is used that conceals a wonderfully powerfully tool to deploy my applications on. It makes light work of hosting the system I am developing for browser-based access and also as a web service for a heavyweight J2SE client and a J2ME client for out-of-office use.
- Chris Hegarty, Lancashire, England

Wow--all this time I had been battling with licensing costs and the huge cost of scaling up applications run on Windows-based systems--now I can provide a truly platform-independent solution tailored to a client's requirements. I only wish I had known about the Sun app server years ago!
- Stephen Carter, Crafers West, Australia

The Sun Java Application Server 8.2 has won us over with its performance and reliability. From installation to application deployment and management, SJSAS has brought a new meaning to J2EE simplicity. It has been a joy to work with its Administration Tool that intuitively helps to manage the server with ease. Sun Java Application Server 8.2 makes J2EE rock!!
- Vijay Albuquerque, London, England

It's a great development experience with the Sun Java System Application Server 8.2. Things were not this easy before. I have found it much easier and useful than any Microsoft server.
- Jay Patel, Melbourne, Australia

My experience using Sun Java Application Server has been really very good. The installation was smooth and easy, the admin console is very well done and allowed us to do all needed resource management and deployment for our enterprise application conveniently and without any hassles. The performance of the app server is exceptionally good as well and with a small memory footprint indeed. Integrates well with NetBeans IDE. Thanks to Sun for such an excellent product!
- Vignesh Sabapathy, Madison, Wisconsin

Fast, convenient, and well organized. The help guides and tutorials are great for beginner-level Java developers.
- Chuck Szeto, Flushing, New York

Easy development and deployment to server, and easy migration to production SJSAS stack. Creator works great with it. It's so much easier than dealing with JBoss or Geronimo. Great work!
- David Staelens, Madison, New York

For me SJSAS is a very welcome replacement for Apache Tomcat on a Red Hat Fedora system. It works great!
- Aad van Lieburg, Tholen, The Netherlands

It simply rocks! First used JBoss and now switched to SJSAS, and it is so easy to use. No comparison to JBoss. Really good work, guys!
- Christopher Atlan

Good impression, good quality, easy to handle, and easy to install. Seems to be a good alternative to the Oracle Application Server.
