Ericsson/Sun Developer Initiative

In times of globalization and when people in general are becoming increasingly mobile the expectation is that services are made available in a flexible way and sensitive to the user context. The technology evolution and industry creativity and standardization efforts have now reached a point where the portability of services and access across networks and devices can be truly made available. The key demands to provide portability is to make it easy to create, compose and assemble value added combinational services tailored to the users preferences, location, access and security demands.

The convergence between IT and Telecommunications Industry is one key trend to allow this portability of services across networks and devices.

In order to support the convergence between IT and telecommunications industries, Sun and Ericsson will join forces to offer third party developers access to converged services delivery platforms through their respective developer programs. By building on existing programs and relationships with developers on each side, the two companies aim to attract, educate and offer the tools, infrastructure and network testing environments for developers and ISVs. Because Ericsson and Sun are also committed to providing these supporting technical programs and testing capabilities, developers will be able to more easily prepare and verify applications for use in the new environment.

WHY ERICSSON / WHY SUN
Sun have announced a joint initiative with Ericsson to support this convergence trend. Ericsson is today the market leader in IMS infrastructures and has existing relationships with many of the leading operators in the world. Ericsson also shares Sun.s commitment to an open environment for the eco-system to grow rapidly and to assist developers in creatin gappealing services building ont he infrasturcture ericssonprovides. Sun and Ericsson have since long been partners and have an extensive relationship between the companies.

Ericsson is today the market leader in IMS infrastructure, which provides the foundation for convergence: operators are introducing IMS solutions to leverage the existing IP-connectivity network. IMS is a cornerstone in the evolution towards all-IP and the network and user service convergence. Most important of all, it does this while preserving the control mechanisms operators need in order to meet user expectations for quality of service, reliability and security.

Convergence is happening. Now.

INFORMATION ABOUT IMS / CONVERGENCE
On the telecommunications side the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) provides the foundation for convergence. IMS is defined by 3GPP/3GPP2 as a new core and service .domain. that enables the convergence of data, speech and network technology over an IP-based infrastructure.

IMS enables the possibility to reach all users with one connection based on one deal with an operator. It also provides the means for the end user to freely select applications independent on operator domains.

Additional values from IMS includes; User Information, Known Media characteristics, session Management, reachability to any device over any access, payment, Accountable Identities and Secure Delivery.

Java Value (AD)
Java is the only ubiquitous technology foundation allowing openness and portability of applications across channels and devices. An application developer must know the client environment in order to develop a client application. By using Java when building services the accessability of APIs and open use of framework and enablers are ensured. There are today more than 5 million java developers around the globe, this provides the foundation for success increating compelling services and applications in the convergent future.

Program Dexcription (HT/TL)

Value Prop for Participants
Today, Independent Software Vendors (ISV) and Developers are facing several problems to meet the market.s evolving needs. This initiative enables ISVs to build new kinds of applications in the communciations area. It will give access to first hand information gathered in one place . be it in newsletters, webpages or whitepapers. Especially if the deployment is near, ISVs have to prove the capability of their applications in real life test scenarios and proving end-to-end testing. Sun and Ericsson will give certain ISVs as well access to global marketing and sales channels from world leading providers of infrastructure for telecommunication industry.

Process
The Ericsson/Sun Developer Initiative operates on a tiered model. By satisfying the entrance requirements at each level, ISVs and Developers gain increasing access to Sun and Ericsson.s resources:

Tiers
Access To
Entrance Requirement
1
Sales and Marketing Channels
Invitation of Tier 2 members by Sun and Ericsson
2
Testing and Benchmarking Environment
Joint Selection by Sun and Ericsson of requests for IMS SDS tool
3
Technology
Membership of both Sun and Ericsson Developer Programs

Criteria (-> TL)
For Tier 1, all ISVs and Developers are invited to explore the converged world.

For Tier 2 and 3 however, certain criteria must be met in order to be considered for participation at this level. These are:

  • Using Sun and Ericsson technology;
  • Being an established ISV;
  • Using an Application Server;
  • Developing applications with an end-user focus;
  • Using (or having a concrete plan to use) IMS;
  • Having a business-model that includes the telecom carrier.

There are also additional factors that would influence our decision positively:

  • Being a SPA Principal Partner;
  • Being an Ericsson Mobility World Partner;
  • Having existing telecom carriers as customers.
Services by the program (HT/TL)

Sun and Ericsson.s Developer Initiative offers services in the areas of

  • Knowledge Transfer
  • Development
  • Testing/Tuning/Benchmarking
  • Go-to-Market

Engagement is easy.

If you want to be considered for participation in this special program, make sure that you applied for membership at Sun Partner Advantage Program and Ericsson's Mobility World Developer Program.

The next step is to place a request for the Ericsson IMS SDS tool (Find out more by reading the technical description. To do so, please fill out these two forms and send them to sun-ericsson-jdi@sun.com to be considered for participation in the Sun-Ericsson Joint Developer Initiative.
