The JavaOne Conference is concentrating on being more environmentally friendly. As a conference we have evaluated where we can make a difference in our efforts and have opted to create a significant virtual campaign and while printing we have chosen to use recycled paper and soy-based inks. Onsite at the Moscone Center there is a significant recycling program and attention on the use of electricity. Below is an outline of what is being "saved" as a result of these changes.

Continue to check this page to see other ways we are conserving and our partners are conserving as well.

Savings from creating a Virtual Direct Mail Piece
  • Direct Mail 1 is historically equivalent to 2.5 pages of 0% recycled copy paper
  • Total paper saved = 4.63 tons
  • Greenhouse Gases reduced (CO2 equivalents) = 13 tons (26,297 lbs)
  • Reduction in wood use = 13 tons
  • # of trees saved (assuming 1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets) = 111
  • Reduction in wastewater (and associated water pollution) = 78,616 gallons (equivalent to 838K cans of soda)
  • Reduction in solid waste (stuff sent to landfills) = 5.1 tons
Savings from using recycled content paper for Advance Conference Guide
  • Paper to be used is 10% post-consumer content
  • Greenhouse Gases reduced (CO2 equivalents) = 11.23 tons (22,460 lbs)
  • Reduction in wood use = 29 tons
  • # of trees saved = 202
  • Reduction in wastewater (and associated water pollution) = 73,627 gallons (equivalent to 785K cans of soda)
  • Reduction in Solid Waste = 6 tons
Savings from using recycled content paper for Program Guide
  • Paper to be used is 25% post-consumer content
  • Greenhouse Gases reduced (CO2 equivalents) = 2 tons (3,874 lbs)
  • Reduction in wood use = 5 tons
  • # of trees saved = 35
  • Reduction in wastewater (and associated water pollution) = 12,700 gallons (equivalent to 135.5K cans of soda)
  • Reduction in Solid Waste = 2,100 pounds
Savings from the Combined Use of Recycled Paper
    Excludes the JavaOne Today newspaper
Includes pre-event and onsite print pieces
  • Greenhouse Gases Reduced (CO2 Equivalents) = 27 tons
  • Reduction in wood use = 48 tons
  • # of trees saved = 364
  • Reduction in wastewater = 170,000 gallons
  • Reduction in Solid Waste (stuff sent to landfills) = 13 tons
