 Java Technology in TV:
 Blu-ray Disc and Cable Day

Television has been a target market for Java technology dating back to its very roots as Oak, where the "Green Team" locked themselves in an office in 1991 and eighteen months later emerged with the StarSeven, an interactive, handheld home-entertainment device controller with an animated touchscreen user interface. We've come a great distance since then. Java technology forms the basis for digital television platform standards worldwide, from cable and broadcast television to IPTV to next generation high definition optical media. In only the last twelve months we've seen North American cable operators move from trials to full deployment of OCAP-enabled set-top boxes and televisions, broadcasters and service providers from Italy to Korea have launched dozens of interactive applications and services targeting MHP devices, and consumers have purchased millions of Blu-ray players and movies worldwide. These deployments all share a common Java ME technology-based platform.

When: Thursday, May 10, 2007
Cost: $350

In recognition of the tremendous rate of growth for Java technology in the television market and the skyrocketing demand for developers skilled in these API's, on Thursday, May 10th the 2007 JavaOne conference will feature a special track of sessions and events targeting developers interested in gaining an understanding of digital television software technologies and markets. Produced in conjunction with CableLabs and major motion picture studios, Blu-ray Disc and Cable Day will feature topics including:

  • A kickoff presentation detailing the current status and future prospects for the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP) and Blu-ray Disc technologies
  • An overview of OCAP technical features and API's
  • A detailed discussion of how to develop OCAP applications
  • The roadmap for future interactive services on cable TV
  • Producing Blu-ray Java (BD-J) software titles for Hollywood
  • The role of Java technology in IPTV

Blu-ray Disc and Cable Day attendees will also gain admission to Thursday evening's Java After Dark event and Friday morning's General Session with James Gosling.

If you are currently a Java developer who would like to learn more about the exciting content development opportunities in the digital television market, or if you're a current television developer looking to gain knowledge and skills applicable to OCAP, BD-J, and related Java technologies, Blu-ray Disc and Cable Day is a must-attend event!
