Java 3D API Customer Success Stories

Fakespace, Inc.

Fakespace, Inc., a leading supplier of 3D immersive visualization systems used to interact with virtual environments, is using the Java 3D API in demonstrations of the Immersive WorkBench Virtual Model Display (VMD) systems. Fakespace VMD systems enable engineers, designers, researchers and military commanders to view and manipulate realistic 3D computer-generated models as if they were real objects. Fakespace created a link between its Virtual Interface Library (VLIB) software tools and the Java 3D API, allowing the software to be used in an immersive environment. This is the first time that Java technology has been utilized in a virtual reality application on a VMD.

The Immersive WorkBench demonstration of the Java 3D API is an interactive 3D visualization that enables the user to arrange virtual furniture on a tiled floor. Models of dressers, chairs and lamps can be chosen from a moving palette and placed in the room using a stylus and the Fakespace PINCH glove system. The virtual models can be selected and arranged in the room just as if they were real physical models. The combined effort by Sun and Fakespace to create this Immersive WorkBench demonstration exemplifies the broad range of immersive display systems available for applications such as virtual prototyping and 3D visualization.

"We are very pleased to be collaborating with Sun on the Immersive WorkBench, which demonstrates perfectly the capabilities of the Java 3D API, simplifying 3D graphics development in areas such as scientific visualizations, virtual world construction, simulation, training and design automation."
