HotJava Browser Version 1.1.2 Installation Instructions for Microsoft Windows NT (Intel) and Windows 95 Platforms

HotJava Browser 1.1.2 comes bundled with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and does not require a separate Java Development Kit (JDK) to be installed on your computer.

HotJava Browser 1.1.2 is delivered in an installation program that makes all necessary modifications to your computer's enviroment as well as installing the HotJava Browser 1.1.2 files.

Installation

Once you download the HotJava Browser 1.1.2, installation and configuration require two basic steps:

1. Run the HotJava Browser 1.1.2 installation program by double clicking on its icon.
   • U.S. and Canada version
     hjb112-win32-dom.exe           7,531,804 bytes
     -or-
   • Global version
     hjb112-win32-gl-ssl.exe        7,319,310 bytes
     -or-
   • Global version without SSL
     hjb112-win32-gl-nossl.exe      7,529,108 bytes

   Alternatively, run the HotJava Browser by typing its name in a Command Prompt window (available under Programs from the Start menu):

   • U.S. and Canada version
     C:\>hjb112-win32-dom.exe
     -or-
     
   • Global version
     C:\>hjb112-win32-gl-ssl.exe
     -or-
     
   • Global version without SSL
     C:\>hjb112-win32-gl-nossl.exe

   This will create a HotJava parent directory and all of the necessary subdirectories and files for this release, including lib\classes.zip.

   DO NOT UNZIP THE CLASSES.ZIP FILE.

2. Run HotJava Browser 1.1.2 .

   The easiest way to run HotJava Browser 1.1.2 is from the Start Menu. Click on Start, go to Programs, then to HotJava Browser, and choose HotJava Browser.

   You can also start the HotJava Browser by double clicking on the HotJava icon in:
   C:\HotJava\bin
   (This assumes you used the default installation location. If you installed into a different location, click on the icon there.)

   Or, you can start the HotJava Browser by typing from a Command Prompt window (available under Programs from the Start menu):
   C:\HotJava\bin\hotjava.exe
   (Again, this assumes you used the default installation location. If not, start the program from the location in which you installed it.)

   If you are running Windows95, you can also create a program item, or shortcut, containing a link to the executable so that you can start HotJava directly from the desktop by double-clicking the HotJava icon.

Troubleshooting

• When you run HotJava Browser, if you get an error message like this:

  A required .dll file, MSVCRT.DLL, was not found.
  

  either add the hotjava\runtime\bin directory to your path in the autoexec.bat file, or copy the msvcrt.dll file from hotjava\runtime\bin to the hotjava\bin directory.

• If you see one of the following error messages:

  net.socketException: errno = 10047
  

  or

  Unsupported version of Windows Socket API
  

  check which TCP/IP drivers you have installed. The HotJava Browser supports only the Microsoft TCP/IP drivers included with Windows95 and Windows NT. If you are using third-party drivers (e.g., Trumpet Winsock), you'll need to change over to the native Microsoft TCP/IP drivers if you want to load applets over the network.
