Version 1.1.5
Installation Instructions for
Sun SPARC-based Computers Running Solaris 2.x

The HotJava Browser 1.1.5 supports Sun Solaris 2.5 SPARC-based computers. It now comes bundled with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and does not require the Java Development Kit (JDK) to be installed separately on your computer.

The HotJava Browser is likely to run on earlier 2.x versions of Solaris, although it has not been tested on these systems. It does not run on Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x), but should run with both CDE and OpenWindows. Only CDE is supported.

Installation

Once you have downloaded the HotJava Browser 1.1.5 self-extracting zip file, the installation process consists of two steps:

  1. Run the HotJava Browser self-extracting zip file
After downloading, move the self-extracting zip file to the location where you want to install the HotJava Browser, then use one of the commands below to run the self-extracting zip file for the appropriate version:

    • U.S. and Canada version
      % chmod +x hjb115-solaris-sparc-dom.sfx
      % hjb115-solaris-sparc-dom.sfx

      -or-

    • Global version
      % chmod +x hjb115-solaris-sparc-gl-ssl.sfx
      % hjb115-solaris-sparc-gl-ssl.sfx

      -or-

    • Global version without SSL
      % chmod +x hjb115-solaris-sparc-gl-nossl.sfx
      % hjb115-solaris-sparc-gl-nossl.sfx

This will create the HotJava1.1.5/ directory, containing several directories and files, including lib/classes.zip.

Alternatively, you may use the unzip command to extract the contents of the self-extracting zip file.
Don't forget to delete the self-extracting zip file once you have unpacked it to save disk space.

DO NOT UNZIP THE CLASSES.ZIP FILE.

  2. Run HotJava Browser.
There are two ways to start the HotJava Browser:

    1. Simply type:
      % HotJava1.1.5/bin/hotjava

      -or-

    2. Add /<your_install_location>/HotJava1.1.5/bin to your path and type:
      % hotjava
