Delta2D
Delta2D, part of a suite of life science products from DECODON, is a software
package for the analysis of 2D gel electrophoresis images. These images are
created by extracting proteins from cells, separating them using electric
currents and staining to make the protein visible. Biologists are interested
in making comparisons between such images for cells under different
experimental conditions - sick and healthy cells, for example.
Comparison of such gel images is a difficult task, due to spatial variation
between gels, among other problems. Delta2D enables the rapid and reliable
analysis of large sets of gels, and the automatic extraction of biologically
meaningful information from the gel images. Delta2D further streamlines the
process of evaluating electrophoresis experiments by supporting mining of the
quantitative data produced, and powerful reporting capabilities.
The usefulness of a gel image analysis package is heavily dependent on the
quality of the information it can extract from the source images. Delta2D
leverages the power of the Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) API to support
sophisticated registration and segmentation algorithms, specifically tailored
to the problem of gel image analysis.
JAI's clean programming interface, and abstraction of various characteristics
of images (data file format, data type of the image), gives DECODON's
programmers the freedom to focus on turning raw image data into information.
This benefit flows on directly to the biologists who use Delta2D: DECODON's
customers are likewise consistently impressed by Delta2D's ease of use, which
allows them in turn to focus on their own research.
