Java Advanced Imaging In Action -- Millenium Technology, Inc

Virgo

Millennium Technology Inc. (MTI) of Vancouver, Canada is dedicated to the development, manufacturing and sale of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems for viewing internal human body structures without the use of radiation. In the past, to see inside the human body meant scanning with x-rays and recording the difference in absorption of radiation between bone, air, fluids and tissue. This procedure, called radiography, is limited because it cannot discriminate between overlapping structures such as organs, muscles and bones. MRI technology creates images without using radiation, providing critical information relating to internal structures and body functions.

MTI has developed its innovative Virgo full-body MRI scanning system to meet the growing need within the world's healthcare systems for powerful, affordable and easily used imaging technology. MTI built the advanced imaging and operating software system for its Virgo scanner utilizing on the Java platform to allow it to integrate with hospital's various legacy networks and to lay the foundation for allowing digital images to be shared for remote diagnostic consultation anywhere in the world, whether in the next room or on another continent.

MTI is employing the Java Advanced Imaging API to power the image viewing portion of the operator's console for the Virgo system's scanner. The Java Advanced Imaging API allows the software to provide brightness/contrast capability, image overlay, image filtering, image rotation, zooming and expansion, all of which are critical to the functionality of the system.

" Having such powerful functions built into the Java Advanced Imaging library allows our developers more time to focus on features that will differentiate us from our competition and helped us avoid re-inventing the wheel. We envision Java technology, and specifically the Java Advanced Imaging API, will continue to be a critical component as we develop follow-on products including Web server technology for the sharing of images both remote and within a clinic, as well as further development of a multi-modality workstation-based viewing software.
