June 14, 2000 -- As the JavaOne conference ended last week, the digital heartbeat that brought San Francisco's Moscone center to life with consumer devices enabled by the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) continues to echo. It is heard in the beep of a Blackberry pager and the ring of Motorola's iDEN phone. It is manifested in the shuffle of millions of Java Card technology-enabled smart cards already in consumers' wallets. This cacophony foreshadows the onslaught of Java technology enabled devices slated to hit the market in coming months.
