If you know of an
application that should be considered for this Swing Connection feature,
we'd love to hear about it. Please contact
us.
| jDiskReport
- jGoodies |
|
Karsten Lentzsch, who recently released the free disk usage viewer called "jDiskReport" on jGoodies.com,
has released a preview version of another totally free utility called "jPathReport".
The Swing GUI offers several custom look and feels and many novel - and
attractive - user interface features. You can launch jDiskReport with
Java Web Start. Oh - don't forget to check out jPathReport's "About" box!
In addition to listing all of the folks who've worked on jPathReport,
there's a request for picture postcards. Send one now!

| Programmer's
Text Editor: Jext.org |
|
Another very impressive stand-alone text editor that has been around
for some time is Jext. It's an
open source project led by Romain Guy who has been developing Swing
applications for nearly as long as Swing has been around. Although
its feature list looks similar to the feature list for jEdit, its
user interface is quite different. Give it a try!
(Note: the
first row of screenshots are Linux, the second are Mac OSX, and
the third are Windows.)

| Raja
- Grégoire Sutre & Emmanuel Fleury |
|
Raja is
an application for rendering highly realistic geometric models
using a graphics technique called ray tracing. Raja was one of
the first web deployed applications that we know of. After launching
it, try cutting and pasting the contents of one of the Raja source
files from the gallery
page into the upper panel in the application. Press the start
button (it looks like a gear) and watch Raja crank out an image.

| Voice
XML Development Tool - Nuance |
Here's a product we learned about at JavaOne this year. Nuance V-Builder(TM)
enables one to build a Voice Web site that users can navigate by
calling it up on the telephone, and talking to it. And yes, the web site
will talk back. V-Builder is based on a new technology called VoiceXML,
the Voice Extensible Markup Language, which is designed for creating audio
dialogs that incorporate speech recognition and synthesized speech, digitized
audio, even recording of spoken input. V-Builder is a graphical tool for
building VoiceXML-based sites. Take a look!
The VBuilder site is at vbuilder.nuance.com
The VoiceXML site is at www.voicexml.org

| CSS1
Editor: UCWare Group |
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are used to define the appearance of modern
HTML documents. A shared style sheet separates the appearance attributes,
like fonts and colors, from the document's content. This makes it easy
to change the appearance of all documents that share the same style sheet.
Similarly, in a single document, separating common appearance attributes
into a style sheet makes it easy to change the overall appearance of the
document. It's a good example of the old computer science maxim that any
problem can be solved by adding one level of indirection. The JustStyle
CSS Editor from UCWare Group is a nice Swing based editor for CSS level
one. It's the first Swing based CSS editor we've seen!

| Web
Presentation Editor - Qarbon.com |
|
"Viewlets" are animated presentations that can be created with a tool
from qarbon.com called ViewletBuilder2. The
tool is used to organize and annotate a collection of screenshots that can be
compiled into a demo that's displayed by a special applet. ViewletBuilder2 is
one of the prettiest applications we've seen. It features a great looking custom
look and feel and easy-to-use wizards for common tasks. Check out their web site
for loads of examples of viewlets in action.

| jEdit
Programmer's Text Editor - Slava
Pestov |
|
Many "programmer's text editors" have been written with Swing.
Some of them are bundled with programming environments and others are
available as stand-alone applications. One of the nicest looking stand-alone
editors we've seen is called jEdit. The jEdit open source project is
led by Slava Pestov at jEdit.org,
who has been developing jEdit for about three years now. Slava informs
us that the editor handles syntax highlighting for 54 different file
types(!). It uses BeanShell to define actions and as a macro language,
and it can be dynamically extended with java plugins. It's also available
as a component that you can plug into your applications.
Beanshell can be found atat www.beanshell.org

| iSQL
Viewer - Markus Kobold |
|
We've had some requests about covering "meat and potatoes" Swing
applications, like database viewers, report generators, and so on. Here's
an example, hopefully the first of many. iSQL-Viewer is
a JDBC (2.0) based suite of tools that handles common database tasks.
The software is free, and it's distributed under the Mozilla public license.
If your business revolves around database work, take a look!

| Baby
Room - Emily Page |
|
And last but not least, we wanted to share these pictures of Swinging
Duke sent to us by Emily and Corby Page from their soon-to-be son's
bedroom (as painted by grandma Mary!).
Emily says that their expecting jr to be as much or more a geek as dad
by age 5. :-)
