Java Plug-in 1.2.2 Documentation

What's New in 1.2.2?

Documentation | FAQ

Japanese

The 1.2.2 release of Java Plug-in is focused primarily on improving reliability through addressing defects. Additionally, there are some thoroughly tested new features we felt were very important to customers.

Just as with release 1.2, Java Plug-in 1.2.2 is part of the Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.2 for Windows which is included with the Java 2 SDK for Windows. If you download either the Java 2 SDK 1.2.2 or JRE 1.2.2 for Windows, you will also receive the latest version of Java Plug-in.

Java Plug-in is not available as a separate download. In order to redistribute Java applets using Java Plug-in, you must download JRE 1.2.2 which includes the appropriate no-fee redistribution license.

For Solaris users, Sun is offering a tuned version of Netscape Communicator and Java Plug-in.

New Features and Functionality

Significantly reduced download footprint
To help you get started with Java Plug-in even more quickly, we've reduced the size of the JRE download to roughly 5 Mb - a 45% reduction!

HTTPS support (GET and POST)
Security remains a topic of great interest for users, and HTTPS support for there core methods will allow users to craft the sort of secure infrastructure their intranets and extranets require.

Verification of RSA digitial signatures

Silent (unattended) installation support
In response to broad interest by many enterprise customers, we are providing this feature to help deployment in environments with many desktops.

For more information about these features, see the related documentation.

For information about the new features in Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition v 1.2.2, see the Java 2 SDK README.
