Java 2 Platform
This release offers many new security enhancements, including the XML Digital Signature API, native platform security (GSS/Kerberos) integration, a Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) login module that employs LDAP authentication, and a new Smart Card I/O API. See the Java SE 6 Security Documentation for further information on security features and changes for this release.
This release of J2SE offers significant enhancements for security. It provides better support for security tokens, support for more security standards (SASL, OCSP, TSP), improvements for scalability (SSLEngine) and performance, plus many enhancements in the crypto and Java GSS areas. See the JDK, v 5.0 Security Documentation for further information on security features and changes for the current release.
Security enhancements include integration of the JCE, JSSE, and JAAS features into the Java 2 SDK rather than them being delivered as optional packages, and addition of two new security features: (1) The Java Certification Path API for building and validating certification paths, and (2) The Java GSS-API for securely exchanging messages between communicating applications using Kerberos. Support for single sign-on using Kerberos is included. See Java 2 SDK, v 1.4.2 Security Documentation for further information on security features and changes for the 1.4.2 release.
The Java 2 Platform introduced policy-based, easily-configurable, fine-grained access control. See Java 2 SDK, v 1.3 Security Documentation for information on security features and changes for the 1.3 release.
Optional Packages
The JAAS, JCE, and JSSE security features have been integrated into the Java 2 SDK, v 1.4. Downloads for these previously optional packages can be found in the Archive area.
