This paper gives a high-level overview of the security architecture in the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Standard Edition version 5.0. It introduces the key application programming interfaces (APIs) and highlights the built-in implementations of important security standards across all of the relevant areas, including cryptography, public key infrastructure, secure communication, authentication, and access control.
Through its unique design and streamlined implementation, Java has made distributed computing, especially on the Internet, a practical reality. As we shall examine here, Java also provides a full complement of powerful and highly flexible security features that make it uniquely capable in the area of the Internet and distributed computing systems.
The Internet is changing the landscape of modern computing. In addition to opening new avenues of access for users, it is fundamentally altering the architecture of today's computing systems.
