New release
Welcome to this special year-end preview of Java Web Services Developer
Pack (Java WSDP) 2.0. We plan to amplify our current Java WSDP web site
shortly to reflect and describe more fully this exciting new release.
However, "code is king," so this new version of Java WSDP leads the way
for now, and in January 2006 you will see updated pages about Java WSDP
2.0.
The Java WSDP 2.0 provides developer choice and flexibility by supporting the Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.1, the open-source Java EE 5 application server ("GlassFish"), and Tomcat 5.0 for Java WSDP.
New architecture
The big news in Java WSDP 2.0 is its rearchitected approach to Web
services and Web application development. We call this the "integrated
stack." This new stack is based on key components in the Java WSDP 2.0:
- JAX-WS 2.0 EA (Java API
for XML Web Services): This component is the successor to JAX-RPC. It
fully delegates all data-binding functionality to the new JAXB
component. (An enhanced version of JAX-RPC with bug fixes, etc., is
still included in Java WSDP 2.0 to insure backward compatibility for
Web services based on the Java WSDP 1.x architecture.)
- JAXB 2.0 EA (Java API for
XML Binding): This component now contains all of the data-binding
functionality, some of which used to be part of JAX-RPC in previous
Java WSDP releases. The new JAXB also supports a wider range of
data-binding formats and capabilities.
- SAAJ 1.3 EA (SOAP with
Attachments API for Java): This component includes support for SOAP 1.2
and follows the latest SAAJ (JSR
67) specification developments.
- XWSS 2.0 EA2 (XML Web
Services Security): This enhanced component has added, among other
features, dynamic response, dynamic policy, and explicit support for
JAX-WS scenarios.
New specifications
Java WSDP 2.0 includes early access implementations for several new key APIs
that are in Java EE 5 and in
Java SE 6.
The implementations for
JAX-WS 2.0,
JAXB 2.0
SAAJ 1.3
and
StAX
are all done as open source and are
part of the
Java WSDP group in the GlassFish Community.
You can stay connected with developments in that community via
The Aquarium news blog.
Based on these new components, the integrated stack also includes Fast Infoset 1.0.1, which is
implemented in the JAX-WS and SAAJ components.
The Java WSDP 2.0 also includes a new, experimental release. JAX-WSA 1.0 EA (Java API for XML Web
Services Addressing) provides a first implementation
of the WS-Addressing
specification, currently under development at the World Wide Web Consortium. (Access to the JAX-WSA component requires a custom installation of the Java WSDP 2.0.)
The Java WSDP components include
implementations of the core WS and XML Java technologies that are fully
tested against different containers. Tutorial and
documentation are available separately. The Java WSDP community at
Java.Net provides more timely, but less stable, builds.
